Psychological research, human factors and and usability engineering were the pillars that I built my career in UX on.
I have since planned and conducted usability tests, expert reviews, heuristic evaluations, card sorts and UI standards inspections for many top global firms.
In the second half of my career I added competitive research, stakeholder interviews, personas, storyboards, story mapping and design thinking to the mix of preferred research and discovery methods.
In my experience, skipping the Research & Discovery phase (or doing it as an afterthought) will often lead to more rework and lower-quality products and services.

Many UX designers will "leapfrog" straight from learning a little bit about the project and the target audience straight into churning out wireframes and prototypes - in the hope of impressing the team and clients.
I prefer to engage other team members, stakeholders and users in collaborative design thinking sessions, using whiteboards and paper sketches as a starting point.
In some cases I even test such early concepts with users before creating any detailed specifications and prototypes.
This not only leads to better results (with fewer rounds of revisions), but also keeps the team engaged and on-board with the approach.

On-Time Execution
Focusing on research, discovery and collaborative design in the early stages makes it easier to deliver robust user flows, wireframes and prototypes on time - or even ahead of time.

Focusing on research, discovery and collaborative design in the early stages makes it easier to deliver robust user flows, wireframes and prototypes on time - or even ahead of time.
My experience with planning, oversight and management of projects also helps to identify those "red flags" that tend to put a strain on the UX team and jeopardize the timely execution.
I work closely with fellow team leads and business stakeholders to ensure any problems are caught and corrected early in the process.
Projects I was on that did not account for research and discovery in the beginning or did not allow for collaborative design were the ones that led to unnecessary rework and delays.
